The DVI Splitter

Although HDMI can transmit top quality video and audio, the DVI is only compatible with the video signal, so a separate cable is needed for the audio. The new HDMI 1.3 can deliver multi-channel digital audio which includes Dolby Digital. High-Definition Multimedia Interface version 1.3 and 1.3a or 1.3b all have the same quality so there is no advantage of one over the other. The video signal for the DVI is the same as HDMI so no real loss of video quality should happen through an adaptor. This means TV’s with a DVI port can display high-definition video via a HDMI to DVI adapter cable from a HDMI source.

Many computers also have DVI ports which can send a signal to a HDMI device through an adaptor. There are some older PCs though which have a video card which is only compatible with computer monitors and not TVs. Before buying a DVI to HDMI adaptor the buyer should make sure his computer supports television formats as well as computer monitors.

Cable length is another question many buyers have when purchasing an adaptor. In general a good quality cable can carry a signal of up to 10 meters without a repeater being needed to amplify the signal. The main limiting factor for the cable length is the receiver chip in the television. A TV receiver chip with a cable equalization chip will be able to facilitate optimal cable length.

A HDMI adaptor will deliver top quality video to a DVI device. Separate audio cables will need to be used to transmit the audio signal. RCA plugs can be used to deliver the audio signal to the TV or separate external speakers. Many people prefer to use external speakers as they can buy better quality speakers than those in the TV. Although the video quality will not be reduced by an adaptor the interface of the user with the TV may be restricted by transmitting from a HDMI source to a DVI receiver. This could affect the two-way communications between the two devices via a signal remote control.
