The DVI to HDMI cable enables a DVI device to connect to an HDMI device or the other way around. The DVI video standard is becoming a highly popular choice for video connection because it transmits high quality digital video signals. However, the HDMI video standard is even much better because it carries with it digital audio signals as well.

The DVI video standard allows the transmission of quality digital video signals so that the resulting image produced is also of high quality. The HDMI video standard also transmits the same quality of video signals, but instead of providing pins for optional video signals, it provides pins for the transmission of digital audio signals as well. Hence, HDMI does not require any extra cables for the transmission of audio signals. Since some devices have either DVI or HDMI connectors, it is important to make use of specific cables that allow the transmission of signals between them, hence the DVI/HDMI cable.

The cable is designed to connect DVI devices like DVD players and Blu-ray players to HDMI output devices. It can also be used to connect any other display devices including LCD TV’s or monitors, Plasma HDTVs, HD monitors, and other devices that are equipped with any of the two connectors. The cable comes in other variations as well. The mini DVI to HDMI cable, for example, is used to connect laptops, notebooks or any other device equipped with mini-DVI to HDMI television sets, projectors, or monitors.

The DVI to HDMI cable with audio is another version that is equipped with an audio cable. Keep in mind that DVI devices require a separate cable for audio. If the transmission involves audio, it is necessary to have an additional audio cable. The additional audio cable allows it to transmit audio signals from the DVI device to the HDMI device. In like manner, this cable also splits the HDMI signals into separate audio and video signals for the DVI device.

When purchasing a cable, make sure to check the connectors on the devices. The female DVI to HDMI cable is fit to use on a DVI device that has a female connector and an HDMI device that has a male connector. The configuration of the connectors is important because the cable will be of no use if the connectors do not fit. Check the length of the cable as well to see if it is sufficient to allow the devices to be connected to each other.

The popular use of both digital video and audio formats today makes one wonder which one is better between DVI vs HDMI. There is no clear cut answer to this query since both video standards are almost similar to each other in terms of image quality. The only difference between the two is that HDMI transmits audio as well, a feature not found in DVI.

Since both video interface standards use the same type of encoding scheme, a DVI input device can be connected to an HDMI output device and the other way around. To understand the main difference between HDMI vs DVI, it is best to look at both of them in detail.

DVI

The acronym stands for digital visual interface, a video standard developed by DDWG. The interface is used to transmit digital video signals in either analog or digital format depending on the version. This video standard is usually used in display output devices like the modern LCD monitors and DVI projectors.

DVI comes in three versions, DVI-A/D/I. DVI-A is used to transmit video signals in analog format, DVI-D in digital format, and DVI-I in both formats. Unlike HDMI, this video standard is more susceptible to noise interference.

HDMI

HDMI is an acronym for high definition multimedia interface; a video standard developed by video display manufacturer’s including Sony, Toshiba, Philips, Hitachi, et al. Unlike DVI, HDMI transmits audio signals in addition to video signals. The interface is commonly used in PCs, Blu-ray disk players, video game consoles, and HDMI digital TV sets.

The interface comes in 4 various versions, HDMI 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3. HDMI 1.0 is not designed to transmit DVD audio, but this feature is made available in version 1.1. Version 1.2 is used for computers while version 1.3 is used for PS3. The HDMI cable can be easily slid into a slot on the input or output device, much like the USB interface. Unlike DVI, HDMI is a lot less susceptible to noise interference.

Conclusion

In many ways, HDMI still emerges victorious since it offers more and better features than that of DVI. First of all, it is able to carry both digital video and digital audio signals in one cable. This gets rid of the need for two separate cables for audio and video. Second, the HDMI interface is less susceptible to noise; hence, its output video is a lot better than that of the DVI output. At any rate, both do provide better image quality than any other video interface.

DVI KVM switches are used for transferring digital data from computers to DVI display devices, and their main advantage is that they do not allow any corruption of data. A DVI KVM switch allows you to connect multiple computers and have access to them with only one USB mice or keyboard. DVI KVM supports a resolution of up to 1600×1200 at 60 Hz.

Aside from the DVI KVM switches, there are also other types of KVM switches that you can use to connect multiple computers with just one KVM or keyboard-video-mouse system. From 2 to 32 ports, the switches come in various models and specifications, according to the user’s requirements. The 2 and 4 port KVM switches are generally designed for personal use, such as at home or small offices, while the more complex ones can be used in enterprise and business level.

You are even able to create server connections using the daisy chaining principle. This is because all the operating systems are supported with a bandwidth of 200 MHz. Because of the increased flexibility, these switches are widely used in all kinds of environments such as business, government, educational financial or commercial work places.

USB KVM switches are very popular as well as they can connect up to 32 computers with just one USB peripheral device. They are available in 2 to 32 ports too, supporting resolutions of up to 1920×1440, and sun resolutions of up to 1152×900. Due to the easiness of connection through the USB switch, this is the most popular device in corporate environments.

If the distance is not a serious issue, A DVI KVM switch or a USB KVM switch will do the job without any problems. However, if you want to connect computers that are far away from each other, an IP KVM Switch is the solution. The KVM over IP concept allows you to access computers that can be anywhere in the world using remote access facilities. This is a very popular choice for surveillance and security systems.

Moreover, there are other types of KVM switches like PS2 or CAT5 switches, and this makes you wonder which of these is the best for your specific needs. Before making a final decision to purchase a KVM switch, make sure you know exactly what features are included and whether or not there is another USB, IP or DVI KVM switch that is better suited for your particular requirements and preferences.

First and foremost, some definitions are in order. With technology evolving so fast these days it is difficult for some of us to keep up with all of the acronyms to describe it. DVI stands for Digital Video (or Visual) Interface. It was introduced as a digital standard in 1999 by Digital Display Working Group (DDWG). As the name implies, DVI is used to carry digital signals to a display. At one time, the display was a computer monitor. But the technology is now commonly used for televisions as well. One thing to keep in mind is that DVI is for video only and does not support digital audio.

HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface. It is a newer technology introduced in 2002 and is an all-digital visual and audio interface allowing use of digital audio. In addition, HDMI includes Digital Rights Management technology protection to allow playback of copy-protected media. DVI does not include the copy protection, so some content may not play or will have loss of output quality when converted from an HDMI device. It is important to know the differences between these two technologies when opting to use a HDMI to DVI converter.

Changing from one technology to other can be as simple as purchasing a HDMI to DVI converter cable, with HDMI on one end and DVI on the other. It simply allows the HDMI device, such as a DVD player, to be attached to a television that has DVI. The cables come in different lengths and qualities and are widely available. One thing that should be noted here is that cable length can affect the quality of the video output, so shorter cables should be used if possible.

If you are not pleased with the sound quality on your DVI television, there is equipment available that includes a HDMI to DVI converter with audio. The television must have a digital audio input for the equipment to work. Most new television models do have this input to support external sound devices such as home theater equipment or surround-sound systems.

Choosing between the use of HDMI and DVI depends on the equipment you already have and equipment that is being replaced by newer technology. At times it is less of a choice and more out of necessity in using a HDMI to DVI converter. However, there is a push toward upgrading to HDMI because of the Digital Rights Management technology.

A DVI switch is a device that is used to connect two or more computer monitors or video sources, so that they can be used simultaneously. For instance if your computer tasks mean you need a large number of sites or windows to be open at the same time, it would be much more convenient for you to use two monitors running side by side, or even two monitors and a CPU. This is quite feasible using this device. You can also use a DVI switch box to connect two complete systems, with two towers.

In order to set up the dual monitor system, you will need two video cards, or a single dual-monitor video card. The single card will have two connectors, an analog connector and a DVI connector. The card requires the installation of a software program.

Alternatively you may want the switch to connect several DVI (digital visual display) sources and to be able to switch among them to a single monitor. For instance you may want to use a gaming console along with a personal computer, a laptop and a DVD. Using this device you can eliminate the need for several displays and save a great deal of space.

The switch is very simple to use, by connecting it to the monitor or other display device, and plugging the video sources into the USB ports. The device is available in 2 port or 4 port format. The 2 port model allows you to route two PCs or other DVI equipped appliances to a single DVI display, while the 4 port DVI switch enables you to connect four appliances. The device can be operated with either a push button or a remote control, and can work with any kind of display including digital TVs, plasma screens, and gaming consoles.

If you want to connect digital video displays to HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) appliances, it is possible to use an HDMI to DVI switch. DVI and HDMI both use digital signals, so there is no requirement to convert digital signals to analog and back to digital. All you need to do is plug in the connections and you are ready to go.

The switch is not only for individual use. It is also available in matrix format, which allows connection between multiple video sources and multiple displays. This means it can facilitate conferences and presentations, and can be used in remote training facilities or control centers, where information from several sources has to be relayed to a single display. In fact, the uses of this small device are almost endless, and it has indeed brought a revolution to the multimedia world.

A VGA to DVI adapter is used in order to make sure that there is a video signal between a computer and a monitor. With many new video cards, a VGA monitor may no longer be able to be used without a special cable or adapter. The different connections can make it difficult for a computer user.

One possible solution is to use a VGA to DVI adapter cable. This allows you to get the signal from the video card to the monitor without using a small adapter. It can be used from many different types of cards, and plugged directly into the monitor. The disadvantage of the cable is that there must be one VGA connection and one DVI connection. If you are planning on making a connection to computers that only have one of the connections, it may be beneficial to use a small adapter.

The small VGA to DVI adapter plugs directly into the video ports on the internal videocard, and changes the type of connection without a more extensive, and expensive cable. This allows more versatility, as the cable that is used can be utilized on a variety of computers. A VGA cable may be taken, and as long as the adapter is available, the cable can most likely be used at any location.

It is important that the type of connection needed is determined before an adapter is purchased. A mini VGA to DVI adapter may be needed in order to connect the monitor to the source of the video. If you purchase a regular VGA to DVI adapter, it may be found that the computer user is not able to get the proper connection. It is also important to note whether there will be a need for the adapter at all, as many newer video cards will have multiple types of connections for the user to choose.

When trying to connect a computer to a video monitor, it is important to know the type of connection that is going to be made. If a VGA to DVI connection is needed, the options available are plentiful. Whether there is an adapter with a normal VGA cable, or a special adaptive DVI to VGA cable is used, finding the right solution can make the IT needs less troublesome. Using the correct solution can make computing more efficient and beneficial to all of the users of a system.

A HDMI to DVI adapter will allow devices with DVI ports to connect to new products with the latest HDMI ports. HDMI or, High-Definition Multimedia Interface, is now the standard interface for delivering crystal clear, digital video and audio through one convenient cable. Fortunately HDMI is backward compatible with DVI. This means, a device with this older system will be able to connect to the new products, through a HDMI to DVI adapter with audio, which is a separate audio cable, delivering the maximum quality of video with audio.

Although HDMI can transmit top quality video and audio, the DVI is only compatible with the video signal, so a separate cable is needed for the audio. The new HDMI 1.3 can deliver multi-channel digital audio which includes Dolby Digital. High-Definition Multimedia Interface version 1.3 and 1.3a or 1.3b all have the same quality so there is no advantage of one over the other. The video signal for the DVI is the same as HDMI so no real loss of video quality should happen through an adaptor. This means TV’s with a DVI port can display high-definition video via a HDMI to DVI adapter cable from a HDMI source.

Many computers also have DVI ports which can send a signal to a HDMI device through an adaptor. There are some older PCs though which have a video card which is only compatible with computer monitors and not TVs. Before buying a DVI to HDMI adaptor the buyer should make sure his computer supports television formats as well as computer monitors.

Cable length is another question many buyers have when purchasing an adaptor. In general a good quality cable can carry a signal of up to 10 meters without a repeater being needed to amplify the signal. The main limiting factor for the cable length is the receiver chip in the television. A TV receiver chip with a cable equalization chip will be able to facilitate optimal cable length.

A HDMI adaptor will deliver top quality video to a DVI device. Separate audio cables will need to be used to transmit the audio signal. RCA plugs can be used to deliver the audio signal to the TV or separate external speakers. Many people prefer to use external speakers as they can buy better quality speakers than those in the TV. Although the video quality will not be reduced by an adaptor the interface of the user with the TV may be restricted by transmitting from a HDMI source to a DVI receiver. This could affect the two-way communications between the two devices via a signal remote control.

The VGA acronym stands for Video Graphics Array, and was introduced by IBM in 1987 as the standard for video displays such as computer monitors. The VGA standard still remains the lowest common denominator for compatibility between computer operating systems and monitors, being analog technology. For example, when you first boot up your computer, any initial video display is shown in VGA mode until the monitor device drivers are loaded into the system. Although this is an older technology, it is not necessary to toss out your VGA equipment just yet.

More recently, video technology has evolved to DVI, or Digital Video Interface. This technology was introduced in 1999 by Digital Display Working Group (DDWD). DVI has become the standard for digital display on computer monitors as well as televisions, providing more vivid video clarity and color than analog technology. For this reason, computer users are searching for a VGA to DVI adaptor or converter to optimize video output on digital monitors or to attach computers to digital televisions. There are several ways to achieve this goal.

Depending on a person’s budget for conversion, a VGA to DVI converter adapter may solve the problem of having incompatible equipment. It is simply a plug that allows the user to attach the VGA equipment output on one end and the DVI input on the other. Prices vary for the adapter, so a bit of shopping around will save a few dollars. Following the same premise, a VGA to DVI converter cable is available to allow connections where there is some distance between the devices. Again, prices vary depending on the manufacturer and the length of the cable that is needed. Check for the type of connection needed (male or female) for both pieces of equipment in order to find the correct cable.

Another option is to purchase a VGA to DVI converter box, which is considerably more expensive than the other two options. However, if connections for DVI are not available on the equipment, the converter box can still convert analog signals to digital signals for increased video quality. One caveat with this scenario is that what is viewed is not really a digital signal, but a crisper more clarified analog signal. Optimally, the video card or device should be fully DVI compatible in order to order to justify use of the converter box.
