DVI D To VGA
One of the challenges of transitioning between technologies and standards is that the conversion can be quite complicated. Often new technology leaves older equipment obsolete, regardless of their remaining lifespan. Once the new technology sets in, support for the older technology becomes a thing of the past. Such has been the case with the transitions from the legacy VGA standard to the newer digital standards (DVI, HDMI, etc…). Many people have been left wondering how to keep from replacing their older analog monitors and projectors as their equipment changes to digital outputs. One option in situations such as this is to use some form of DVI D to VGA conversion.
The Challenge
The biggest problem converting DVI D to VGA is the difference between the signals. DVI is inherently digital (although two types of DVI cables can handle analog signals, A and I), and VGA is analog. If your device is DVI Digital, then you cannot simply use a DVI D to VGA cable to connect the display. The signal must first be converted from digital to analog.

The Solution
The device you use to convert your signal does not necessarily have to be complicated or bulky. Manufacturers of DVI D to VGA converters have been able to compact the device down into a single cable implement. You generally will have the option of a single cable with a somewhat bulky connector (it must do the converting as well) or you run your signal through a conversion box. Either option seems to work just fine.
One of the best ways to evaluate if the cable conversion will work for you is to read up on reader’s reviews of the particular converter. The higher the success rate of the reviewers, the more likely the solution will work for you as well.
The cost of the DVI D to VGA adapter can range greatly in price, but quality converters are often found for upwards of $150.00. Conversion, as opposed to adapting, can be quite costly. You will have to weigh the benefits of the conversion in comparison to simply replacing your legacy equipment.
Although the conversion from DVI D to VGA can be complicated, it is certainly something that can be done. If you find that cost of converting makes more sense than upgrading your legacy displays, a converter from digital to analog may be an excellent cost saving solution.
